In 2015, Danny Pritchard, the founder of Duffle&Co, embarked on a two-month backpacking trip that took him through India, Nepal, and Indonesia. During his journey, he met skilled leather craftsmen who were facing economic challenges. Among them was Sundari, who had lost her job due to outsourcing by major fashion labels. Living below the poverty line, Sundari found it difficult to finance her children's education.

Armed with New Zealand ingenuity, Danny, along with his friend Kai, made the first purchase of handmade bags. This marked the birth of Duffle&Co. Today, the brand is headquartered in New Zealand and managed by Danny and his partner Emily. They have successfully bridged the gap between ethical production and the use of sustainably sourced, natural materials, offering luxury handcrafted bags that resonate with consumer values.

Meet the skilled artisans

One of Duffle&Co’s long-term missions is to empower artisans globally and help them preserve and continue their heritage crafts. Sundari and her family are artisans based in Bali, Indonesia. Duffle&Co also have another establishment based in India. They specialise in time-honoured crafting techniques that have been passed down through generations. Each Duffle&Co bag is hand signed by the person who made it, to make your piece truly unique. Through its ethical and sustainable practices, Duffle&Co has expanded its community involvement, employing over 15 artisans who are paid well above the living wage. As a result, Sundari can now afford to send her children to school. Choosing a Duffle&Co product isn't just about quality; it's a conscious decision to support local communities and positively impact the environment and people's lives.

Cow Leather

Indulge in the luxury of sustainable leather, crafted to leave a lasting environmental legacy for future generations. Duffle&Co uses only the finest biodegradable NAKED COW™ leather in their cow leather ranges. This locally sourced leather hails from the grass-fed pastures of Oamaru and Invercargill in New Zealand and is a by-product of the food industry. Sourced exclusively from the top layer of the hide, this full-grain, end-of-roll leather retains the hide's natural markings and grain. The leather is then dyed using natural vegetable oils and cashew extracts that help to maintain a neutral pH.

Recycled Leather

Duffle&Co also sources repurposed by-product leather, a type of recycled leather from Indonesia. Originating from the surplus of other brands, these leather offcuts are usually discarded due to minor imperfections that large factories deem unusable. Expert craftsmen skilfully cut around these defects to repurpose the remaining leather. This unique and sustainable approach ensures that each bag is distinct, marked by the natural grain and individual characteristics of each hide.

Organic Cotton Canvas

The GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic cotton canvas is sourced and handcrafted in India. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, a certification that ensures a product is made from organic fibres and produced sustainably and ethically. This ethically sourced cotton is handwoven on traditional wooden looms and then dyed using plant-based, azo-free dyes.

Piñatex

An alternative to leather, Duffle&Co also use Piñatex, a vegan-friendly leather crafted from pineapple leaves. Piñatex is an innovative, eco-conscious material derived from repurposed pineapple leaves, a by-product of existing agriculture. From inception to doorstep delivery, Duffle&Co prioritises sustainability at every step. Even the shipping bags used are biodegradable - simply toss them into your home compost after removing the labels and they'll break down in about 90 days. Each Duffle&Co purchase directly contributes to planting five mangrove trees. These trees not only restore biodiversity and bolster wildlife populations but also generate employment for local communities through their planting and upkeep. Moreover, these mangroves act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 and thus playing a crucial role in climate change mitigation.

The End of Life Reclamation Program

Duffle&Co is deeply committed to sustainability, targeting a fully circular design and production model by 2025. The objective is to prevent any of their products from entering landfills. Rather, Duffle&Co aims for continuous material circulation, enabling the reclaiming, recycling, and repurposing of their products again and again. The Reclamation Program offers two main routes: repair and resale, or deconstruction and recycling. If your Duffle&Co bag has more life left in it, it will be repaired and reintroduced to the market during their annual sample sale. This not only extends the bag's life but also provides it with a new, loving owner.

For items that can't be repaired, Duffle&Co will disassemble the bag into its constituent parts—be it recycled leather, Pinatex, or organic cotton—and repurpose or recycle these materials. Hardware elements are collected and reused in repair work or sent back to the workshop to be incorporated into new product samples.
